Sri Lanka, Sept. 7 -- Today (7) marks Binara Full Moon Poya Day, a significant date in the Buddhist calendar.

Historically, several important events in Buddhist history took place on this day, making it a time of reflection and observance for the faithful.

Notably, the day commemorates the ordination of Bhikkhunis, when Prince Siddhartha's maternal aunt and stepmother, Mahapajapati Gotami, and 500 other women joined the Buddha's Sangha.
