Sri Lanka, June 1 -- A major capacity expansion plan for Terminal 1 of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) aims to increase its annual design capacity from 6 million to 10 million passengers. This initiative is set to address the ongoing delays in completing the long-awaited BIA Terminal 2 project.

Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku confirmed the decision to expand the existing terminal's capacity to resolve airport congestion, noting the project carries an estimated cost of around Rs. 15 billion. The expansion plan consists of four or five separate projects funded entirely through local sources without foreign funding assistance.
