Sri Lanka, Aug. 26 -- Parliamentarian Jeevan Thondaman has sharply criticized the recent arrest of the former president, labeling the event as a politically motivated move rather than a pursuit of justice.

In an exclusive interview with India's NDTV, Thondaman questioned the legality and timing of the arrest, suggesting it was orchestrated for political gain.

Thondaman highlighted the controversial circumstances surrounding the arrest, which occurred while the former president was giving a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on a Friday.

He pointed out the deliberate timing, stating, "He was arrested and was taken to court on a Friday, with the obvious reason being that no chance of bail on Saturday and Sunday."
