Sri Lanka, Aug. 15 -- The Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) is calling on the government to immediately reverse its decision to permit foreign investors to cultivate cannabis for export.

The organisation warns that the decision poses serious risks to the country's health, economy, and security.

In a press statement, the ADIC said that Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced on August 12 that seven foreign investors had been granted permission by the Board of Investment (BOI) for cannabis cultivation.

The stated aim is to generate economic benefits for Sri Lanka.

The ADIC noted that a similar proposal was previously halted following strong opposition from medical and community groups.
