Sri Lanka, Aug. 24 -- During a joint press conference held by opposition political parties, Member of Parliament Daya Siri Jayasekara claimed that former President Ranil Wickremesinghe's arrest is a political witch-hunt orchestrated by the new government.

"We have gathered here to discuss ending a constitutional dictatorship," Jayasekara said.

"It was Ranil Wickremesinghe who abolished the country's criminal defamation laws and ended presidential immunity. He worked to put the country back on track when it was in a terrible state. The new government can only speak about corruption because of his efforts."
