Sri Lanka, Sept. 16 -- A new police report reveals a dramatic rise in drug-related arrests and seizures across the country in 2024.

According to the data, more than 228,000 individuals were arrested for drug-related offences during the year - a 41 per cent increase compared to 2023.

Arrests linked to crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as 'Ice,' recorded the sharpest rise, surging by 161 per cent. Of the total arrests, 68,132 were specifically for offences related to 'Ice.'

Law enforcement agencies also reported substantial drug seizures in 2024, including 832.3 kilograms of heroin, 8,359 kilograms of cannabis, and 1,364 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.
