Sri Lanka, Sept. 16 -- A report from the police shows a significant increase in drug-related arrests and seizures across the country in 2024.

Over 228,000 individuals were arrested for drug-related offences during the year, a rise of about 41 per cent compared to 2023.

The data also highlighted a dramatic increase in arrests for crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as 'Ice', which surged by 161 per cent. Of the total arrests, 68,132 were specifically for offences related to 'Ice'.

Authorities also seized large quantities of drugs in 2024, including 832.3 kilograms of heroin, 8,359 kilograms of cannabis, and 1,364 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.
