Why Japan's most popular royal, Princess Aiko, cannot become empress despite growing public support
India, Oct. 11 -- Princess Aiko is one of Japan's most popular royals, attracting huge crowds at public appearances and inspiring fans to buy outfits similar to hers. However, despite her widespread popularity, the 24-year-old daughter of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako is legally barred from becoming empress.

According to a report by The Guardian, an April 2026 poll conducted by the Mainichi Shimbun found that 72% of respondents supported allowing a woman to ascend the throne, while just 10% opposed the idea.
