What Russell Westbrook said on NBA future days before shocking retirement; 'I love basketball.'
India, Aug. 13 -- Russell Westbrook has brought the curtain down on an 18-year NBA career, announcing his retirement on social media Wednesday after playing for seven different teams.
The Seattle SuperSonics selected Westbrook with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. He went on to finish his career with impressive averages of 20.9 points, 6.9 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game.
However, Westbrook's future had remained uncertain throughout the summer as he considered his options in free agency.
Despite the uncertainty, the 37-year-old appeared determined to continue playing just days before his retirement announcement.
"I love playing basketball. And if it happens, it works. That is my plan," Westbrook said.
