Victims' kin say factory flouted safety norms
CHENNAI, April 21 -- Families of the victims in the Tamil Nadu firecracker unit blast that claimed 25 lives said on Monday that the factory did not follow prescribed safety guidelines.
Sahadevan, a resident of Kariappatti, whose uncle was one of the victims, said the firecrackers unit in Virudhunagar district did not follow the guidelines, which include not operating on Sundays. "It is like that one bad day, this incident occurred," he said.
He added that as per rules there should be at least 10-metre distance between the fire cracker manufacturing rooms to prevent spread of fire. "That was not the case in this factory and around 20 people were working in a room which could accommodate five to six people as per norms," he said.
