India, Aug. 25 -- Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday announced the scrapping of the proposed Parandur airport project, sparking a political row in the state. The main Opposition, DMK, criticised the decision and staged a walkout from the state assembly. The announcement comes four years after former chief minister and DMK president MK Stalin unveiled plans for the airport, about 60km from the state capital.
Speaking in the assembly, Vijay said the existing airport at Meenambakkam currently has the capacity to handle 30 million passengers a year. He said it would instead be expanded by adding a new passenger terminal with capacity to handle another 20 million passengers annually.
