India, June 6 -- The Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district has been designated as a Ramsar site, making it the 100th such site in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Friday. "This wetland is rich in avifaunal biodiversity, attracting several migratory and resident birds," PM Modi wrote on X. "India's unwavering commitment to protecting our natural surroundings and wetlands in particular is clearly reflected in this feat." Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, an environmental treaty established in 1971.HTC
