Umar-Ali convoy puts spotlight on Atiq Ahmed gang's lingering influence
PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 13 -- More than three years after the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, the IS-227 gang's network and support base remain a concern for the Uttar Pradesh Police, with several key operatives still absconding and a large number of associates continuing to face criminal cases.
The gang's lingering influence came under renewed scrutiny after a convoy of more than 30 vehicles allegedly followed police escorts transporting Atiq's sons, Mohammad Umar and Ali Ahmed, to Prayagraj for their younger brother Aban Ahmed's funeral on August 8. Police are now identifying the vehicles and their occupants, with FIRs registered in Prayagraj and Pratapgarh over alleged violations during the journey.
