India, Oct. 9 -- S Ranganathan, the owner of a Tamil Nadu-based pharmaceutical company that produced the 'toxic' cough syrup Coldrif, has been arrested in Chennai and taken into custody by the Madhya Pradesh police on Wednesday night. The cough syrup has been linked to the deaths of more than sixteen children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

According to the Chhindwara SP, Ranganathan will be presented before a Chennai court today and later taken to Chhindwara after a transit remand is obtained.

The Health Ministry has confirmed that Coldrif cough syrup contained diethylene glycol (DEG), a poisonous chemical often used in industrial solvents. Even small quantities of DEG can be fatal.
