Kanpur, Nov. 5 -- A woman was allegedly tied to a chair, doused with petrol and burnt alive by her husband over suspicion of an extramarital affair in Jagatpur village of Kannauj district on Thursday morning. The woman's body was reduced to a skeleton in the blaze, which took the fire personnel nearly one-and-a-half hours to extinguish.

The accused, identified as Sukhbir Singh alias Monu, 35, fled with the couple's two children. The children, a seven-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, were with him when he escaped, villagers said.

The flames rising from the house alerted residents, who rushed to the spot and informed the police and fire brigade. When firefighters eventually entered the house, they found Sonam's skeletal remains.
