MUMBAI, March 13 -- Deonandan Prasad Singh, an additional chief engineer (superintendent) on board Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, Safesea Vishnu, died on Wednesday after it was attacked near Iraq's Khor Al Zubair Port, close to Basra.
The incident occurred during ship-to-ship cargo loading operations amid ongoing tensions in the region, according to a press note issued by the Directorate General of Shipping.
The tanker, carrying about 48,000 metric tonnes of naphtha, was struck by an unidentified object.
Preliminary reports suggest that a white unmanned speedboat loaded with explosives approached the vessel from the starboard side and rammed into it, triggering a major fire on board.
