SC dismisses Abu Salem's release plea
India, Sept. 11 -- The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed gangster Abu Salem's plea seeking release from jail in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case observing that he has not completed the 25 years jail term based on a solemn assurance made by the Indian government while deporting him from Portugal in 2002. Observing that the offence for which he is convicted was directed not against individuals but an entire nation, the bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said, "The larger national and economic consequences of such acts, therefore, cannot be lost sight of while considering the appellant's claim."
