Patiala, Sept. 30 -- Days after death-row convict Balwant Singh Rajoana wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an immediate decision on his long-pending mercy petition, Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami met him at Patiala Central Jail on Tuesday.

They were accompanied by Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar Giani Tek Singh and SGPC executive member Surjit Singh Garhi. The delegation enquired about Rajoana's health and well-being.

Rajoana, who was sentenced to death for his role in the 1995 assassination of then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, has spent more than 31 years in prison, including nearly two decades on death row.
