Public hospital surgeries double in 5 years, govt cites efforts put into upgradation
India, Oct. 5 -- The number of surgeries in government hospitals across the state has almost doubled in the last few years, from 3,45,000 in 2020-21 to 6,50,00 in 2024-25 (see graphic). The numbers represent minor and major operations that have taken place in the entire gamut of healthcare facilities, from the district hospitals, rural hospitals and general hospitals to specialised women's hospitals and even referral service hospitals.
Trauma Care centres, located close to important highways and meant mainly for accident victims, have also seen a rise, though nowhere as dramatic, from 16,910 surgeries in 2022-23 to 17,844 in 2024-25. Between April and December 2025, trauma care hospitals had already done 18,990 surgeries.
