Police raid in cyber fraud case: HC flags 'fishing expedition', grants bail to Lucknow's Summit call-centre employee
LUCKNOW, Sept. 15 -- The Allahabad high court, Lucknow Bench, questioned the police action of arresting 119 people in an alleged international cyber fraud case before establishing through background investigation how the call centre was involved in defrauding US citizens.
Granting bail to call-centre employee Mehul Jangid, Justice Manish Mathur observed that the police appeared to have "worked backwards" by first conducting a raid and making arrests and then pursuing the investigation. The bail release order was passed on September 9.
The court said the approach could amount to a "fishing expedition" and noted that the seriousness of cyber fraud placed a greater responsibility on the police to identify and arrest the actual perpetrators...
