India, Sept. 1 -- India on Monday rejected a ruling by a five-member Court of Arbitration in The Hague that ordered it to uphold the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan, with New Delhi calling the tribunal "illegally constituted" and reiterating that the pact will remain "in abeyance".

The tribunal held that the pact remains fully in force and that India must continue to observe its obligations under it, including those governing the design and operation of its hydroelectric projects on the western rivers. It also directed interim measures on India's Ratle project in Jammu and Kashmir.
