LUCKNOW, Aug. 29 -- In a rethink of its May decision, the Uttar Pradesh government has deferred its plan to make uniforms or colour-coded dress mandatory in universities and degree colleges, fearing that introducing the system after the academic session has begun could trigger student unrest. The government will now reconsider introducing uniforms from the next academic session.

Higher education minister Yogendra Upadhyaya said on Saturday that the decision was taken as the new academic session had already begun and introducing a uniform midway could lead to unrest among students.

"We have decided to put on hold the introduction of uniforms in higher education institutions from this year. The new session has already started on campuses....
