India, Sept. 16 -- Dan Marino is one of football's most iconic figures. Known for his extraordinary career with the Miami Dolphins, Marino shocked many when he revealed that he was quietly battling a serious liver condition. The Hall of Fame quarterback recently opened up to PEOPLE, sharing that he was first diagnosed with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) during a routine checkup back in 2007.

Looking back, Marino recalls only a few subtle signs. "I was a little fatigued," he says.
