Agartala, April 2 -- A 31-year-old man was arrested on Thursday morning for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl in Tripura's Unakoti district, police said.

The accused allegedly took the minor to an abandoned house in the village and raped her while her parents were out for work. Locals gathered after hearing the minor cry, following which they informed her mother. The locals also caught and handed him to police.

A police team reached the spot and took the accused into custody. "A case was lodged against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act," a police officer said, adding that the accused was arrested.
