Maharashtra tightens RTI rules, hikes fees
India, June 18 -- Obtaining information under the Right to Information (RTI) Act in Maharashtra is set to become costlier, with the state government amending the rules governing the law.
Under the newly notified Maharashtra Right to Information Rules, 2026, the application fee has been raised from Rs.10 to Rs.30, while the cost of obtaining copies of documents has increased from Rs.2 to Rs.5 per page. The rules were notified on June 12.
The state government said the amendments are aimed at improving transparency and streamlining the processing of RTI applications. However, RTI activists have criticised the move, calling the new rules restrictive.
