Someone else's behavior may reflect how they choose to act, but it does not have to shape your character. Real detachment means staying in control of yourself, especially when the person in front of you is not doing the same.
When someone speaks to you disrespectfully, your first instinct may be to match their energy. But once you respond the same way, their behaviour starts to control yours. You do not need to adopt someone's attitude simply because they brought it into the conversation.
