India, Aug. 26 -- At least five people were killed and 14 were injured after heavy rainfall led to a landslide on the route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop the Trikuta hill on Tuesday afternoon.

This took the death toll in rain-related mishaps in the region to nine.

According to officials cited by news agency PTI, the landslide occurred around 3pm near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Ardhkuwari. Rescue operations were underway, and the pilgrimage was suspended. Follow LIVE updates here.

The disaster struck at a point about halfway along the winding 12-km trek to the hilltop Hindu shrine.
