Karnal, July 26 -- An associate professor at the Institute of Environmental Studies, Kurukshetra University, prof Sandeep Gupta has received an Rs.18 lakh grant from the state government to develop a model for early detection of leaf rust disease in wheat using artificial intelligence (AI) based technology.

Haryana is one of the country's leading wheat-producing states and scientists believe the project will be crucial in reducing crop losses due to leaf rust-a common disease that declines wheat production and grain quality.

The Haryana State Higher Education Council under the Haryana State Research Fund (HSRF), awarded Gupta a research grant of Rs.18 lakh for the project.
