India, Aug. 26 -- At least five people were killed and 14 others were injured after heavy rainfall led to a landslide on the route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop the Trikuta hill on Tuesday afternoon.
According to officials cited by news agency PTI, the landslide took place near the Inderprastha Bhojnalaya at Adhkwari at around 3pm. Rescue operations are underway and the pilgrimage has been suspended.
The disaster struck at a point about halfway along the winding 12-km trek to the hilltop shrine.
Earlier, the yatra had been suspended on the Himkoti trek route since morning, but continued on the old route until 1:30pm, when authorities decided to suspend it until further orders.
