Infection with one serotype generally provides long-term protection against that serotype but not against the other three; a later infection with a different serotype may be associated with a higher risk of severe disease. At the same time, Aedes aegypti has adapted remarkably well to urban life. It breeds in small collections of water around homes, construction sites, markets, institutions and public spaces, and it can sustain transmission even where periodic fogging or spraying is undertaken.
