India, Sept. 10 -- On September 11, 2001, the world watched in horror as America suffered the deadliest terrorist attack in history - one that would reshape its foreign policy and the course of world events.

Four airlines were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists to carry out a series of attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. Of the four planes, two crashed into the North and South towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, plummeting the twin towers to the ground and covering Lower Manhattan with smoke, debris and grey dust.

A third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a fourth in rural Pennsylvania after a passenger revolt.
