Kolkata, Oct. 17 -- A division bench of the Calcutta high court on Friday stayed an order a single-judge bench passed 24 hours earlier to let the Communist Party of India (Marxist) set up a bookstall in North 24 Parganas district's Bongaon during the Durga Puja festival, lawyers who attended the hearing said.
The division bench, which allowed the single bench to hear the CPI(M)'s petition on Thursday, ruled on Friday that roadside stalls can operate only with permission from competent authorities.
The division bench of chief justice Ravindra V Ghuge and justice Shabbar Rashidi ruled that the CPI(M) cannot set up a stall stall outside its party office on Jessore Road ordering a stay on justice Sougata Bhattacharya's single bench order.
