India, Sept. 18 -- The Haryana Forest Department has written to the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) for a wildlife census in the Aravallis to assess the wildlife population, as the last such census was conducted in 2017 and before that in 2012, an official said on Thursday.

The census is conducted by state forest department in collaboration with WII. Although a wildlife census was conducted in 2022, the official said it was restricted to the Shivalik belt, leaving the Aravallis unmonitored and without updated data.

According to the forest department, the state has no recent population estimates for wildlife in the Aravallis, as no subsequent surveys have been carried out over the past nine years to track changes in the region.
