India, May 27 -- Something significant has happened in Indian higher education over the last two years: the mad rush to go abroad has finally slowed down.
After a decade of near-uninterrupted growth in outbound student numbers, the pace of departures has eased. According to data placed before the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of Education, the number of Indian students departing for foreign universities in 2025 fell to 6.26 lakh. It saw a sharp drop from the 9.08 lakh recorded in 2023.
