Delhi HC upholds TRAI's 12-minute rule on TV ad
New Delhi, May 30 -- The Delhi high court on Friday upheld the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) regulation capping television advertising at 12 minutes per hour, including 10 minutes of commercial advertisements and two minutes of channel self-promotion, observing that the measure reflects a considered response to legitimate consumer grievances aimed at preserving viewing quality and protecting viewers' interests.
The advertising limit stemmed from TRAI's Standard of Quality of Service (Duration of Advertisements in Television Channels) (Amendments) Regulations, 2013, which state that "no broadcaster shall, in its broadcast of a programme, carry advertisements exceeding twelve minutes in a clock hour."
