New Delhi, Sept. 2 -- The Congress on Tuesday took a jibe at the Union government's celebration of India's 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter, arguing that the headline number presents a "Greatly Distorted Picture of the economy" that conceals a starkly different reality of rising prices, joblessness and a widening wealth gap that most Indians live with every day. "The bottom 50% survives on a humiliating 15%... the top one per cent controls roughly 40 per cent of the country's wealth.
