Centre notifies 'Keralam' as southern state's new name
India, Aug. 26 -- The Centre on Tuesday notified 'Keralam' as the new name for the state, according to a gazette notification. "In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of Section 1 of the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Act, 2026, the Central government hereby appoints the 25th day of August, 2026, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force," a notification issued by the ministry of home affairs said. Earlier this month, President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to a Bill to rename Kerala as Keralam, turning the legislation into a law.
