Chandigarh, Sept. 14 -- The city recorded its heaviest September rainfall in 16 years, with 121 mm recorded at the airport observatory till 5.30 pm on Sunday, according to India Meteorological Department's (IMD) data.

The rainfall was highly uneven across the city as the Sector 39 observatory, just a few kilometers away, recorded only 38.3 mm during the same period. The airport and Sector 39 observatories are located at the eastern and western ends of the city, respectively. IMD uses rain data from both the observatories to calculate the average to prepare their month-end report for the city. In Panchkula, the Automatic Weather Station recorded 18.5 mm rainfall.
