Amritsar, Sept. 17 -- The Punjab government on Wednesday formed a seven-member committee that will coordinate and hold discussions with the Akal Takht-constituted panel on the anti-sacrilege law and give suggestions for further action.

The Akal Takht has raised several objections to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026. The bill had been unanimously passed by the Punjab Assembly on April 13. The law includes a provision for stricter punishment, including life imprisonment for any act of sacrilege against the Guru Granth Sahib. It also proposes fines from Rs.5 lakh to Rs.25 lakh.
