KANPUR, April 1 -- Five doctors and an alleged broker has been arrested by the Kanpur police after a payment dispute of Rs.50,000 allegedly blew the lid off a kidney transplant racket in the city, police said. Citing preliminary findings, police officers said the accused had carried out about 50 illegal kidney transplants in the city, including one involving a South African woman. The Meerut-based doctor allegedly ran a Telegram group to connect donors and recipients and negotiate payments, the officers said. The racket allegedly came to light after a man from Uttarakhand approached the police claiming he was short-paid Rs 50,000 after agreeing to sell his kidney for around Rs.10 lakh.
