India, Oct. 5 -- As Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) continues to operate a large number of ageing and poorly maintained buses, 24,992 buses broke down on the roads between April and July 2026. This caused widespread inconvenience to passengers across the state.

The MSRTC recorded 64,335 bus breakdowns in 2022-23, as many as 67,019 in 2023-24, at least 66,552 in 2024-25 and 64,872 in 2025-26.

The MSRTC has around 5,000 buses that have completed 12 to 13 years of service, making them due for retirement and scrapping under the corporation's fleet replacement policy.
