India, May 25 -- At least 10 members of a family drowned while one other remains missing after a group attempting to collect freshwater mussels was swept away by strong currents near the Palli Hallu Venkchapur river in Karnataka's Uttara Kannada district on Sunday, police said. "Fourteen people had collectively gone fishing during heavy rainfall," Uttara Kannada SP Deepan MN said. "At that time, the river water level suddenly increased and a strong gush of water swept them away." Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said he was deeply distressed to learn about the incident as he announced ex gratia of Rs.5 lakh each to the families of the deceased.P12
