India, March 14 -- Renowned Tamil poet and lyricist Vairamuthu has been honoured with the prestigious Jnanpith Award, marking a historic moment for Tamil literature. With this recognition, he becomes only the third writer from the Tamil literary tradition to receive India's highest literary honour and the first in nearly two decades. Before him, the award was given to celebrated writers Akilan in 1975 and Jayakanthan in 2002.
The Jnanpith Award carries a cash prize of 11 lakh, along with a bronze statue of Goddess Saraswati and a citation recognising the recipient's contribution to Indian literature. In 2024, the 59th edition of the award was presented to noted Hindi poet Vinod Kumar Shukla.
