Goa, April 13 -- A major electoral dispute in West Bengal has come under scrutiny in the Supreme Court of India, where the bench declined to allow lakhs of voters, whose names were deleted from electoral rolls, to cast ballots ahead of polling. The court expressed concern about overwhelming appellate tribunals with last-minute appeals, especially with elections scheduled for April 23.
The bench, led by Chief Justice of India, noted that over 34 lakh appeals had already been filed challenging deletions or rejections from voter lists. Petitioners argued that such a large number of citizens should not be denied their right to vote without timely remedies.
