Goa, Aug. 23 -- The influenza A (H1N1) strain currently circulating in India is not a new variant, and most reported infections are causing mild symptoms, scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have said. Officials have also ruled out the need for panic despite a recent increase in cases, particularly in Delhi.

According to ICMR officials, nearly 1,800 H1N1 cases have been reported in Delhi during the current season. However, they said the rise does not indicate the emergence of a new strain or an unusual outbreak pattern.
