NFF Opposes Draft National Water Metro Policy, Cites Threat to Fisherfolk and River Ecosystems
Goa, July 11 -- The National Fishworkers' Forum (NFF) has opposed the Draft National Water Metro Policy, alleging that its implementation could adversely affect the rights and livelihoods of traditional fishing communities across the country.
Speaking during a consultation meeting in New Delhi, NFF General Secretary Olencio Simoes expressed concern over the proposed policy, stating that large-scale dredging required for Water Metro projects could have serious ecological consequences.
Simoes warned that extensive dredging could damage river ecosystems, disrupt aquatic biodiversity and destroy fish breeding habitats, ultimately affecting the livelihood of thousands of traditional fisherfolk who depend on inland and coastal water bodies.
