Goa, June 25 -- Amid growing public confusion over the role of passports in establishing citizenship and eligibility for government benefits, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has clarified that an Indian passport is primarily a travel document and should not be regarded as conclusive proof of citizenship.
The clarification was issued during a detailed briefing on India's expanding passport and mobility ecosystem, where officials highlighted a series of reforms aimed at making passport services more accessible, secure and globally accepted.
