Landslide Partially Blocks Chyakoong River in Sikkim, Authorities Rule Out Immediate Flood Threat
Goa, Sept. 7 -- A landslide in North Sikkim's Mangan district partially blocked the Chyakoong River and affected the Teesta River, triggering concern among residents amid heightened fears following recent flooding and disasters in the region.
The landslide occurred late Saturday night near the Naga Forest area, opposite Theng Tunnel. The incident has raised alarm locally, particularly in view of the devastating 2023 Teesta flash flood and recent reports of severe flooding in neighbouring Nepal.
Authorities, however, have said there is no immediate threat of flooding downstream and have urged people not to panic or circulate unverified information on social media.
