ICC Faces Backlash Over New ODI World Cup Format, Associate Nations Cry Foul
Goa, July 17 -- The International Cricket Council (ICC) is facing criticism after unveiling revised formats for the men's ODI and T20 World Cups, with associate nations and the World Cricketers' Association (WCA) arguing that the changes reduce opportunities for emerging teams.
The biggest controversy surrounds the 2027 ODI World Cup. While the tournament will officially feature 14 teams, only 12 will enter the main event. The remaining three teams qualifying through the global qualification pathway will first compete in a preliminary "Super Series", with only one team progressing to the World Cup proper.
