Goa, Aug. 18 -- Jharkhand student leader Devendra Nath Mahato called off his hunger strike on Monday evening, hours after the Hemant Soren government announced the cancellation of examinations and government recruitments that had come under scrutiny amid weeks of student protests.

Mahato, who has been undergoing treatment at Ranchi's Sadar Hospital, ended his fast after meeting a group of ministers and MLAs who visited him at the hospital.

Following the government's decision, Mahato expressed his appreciation for the steps being taken and said the ongoing investigation was focused on those allegedly responsible for irregularities in the examination system.
